Permettez-moi de commencer en disant que j\u2019attendais cette conf\u00e9rence avec impatience. La\u00a0digital preservation<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0est une de mes passions personnelles, et iPRES est clairement l\u2019endroit o\u00f9 rencontrer certains de ses meilleurs d\u00e9fenseurs, acteurs et chercheurs. C\u2019\u00e9tait la deuxi\u00e8me fois que je venais \u00e0 Glasgow (la premi\u00e8re fois, c\u2019\u00e9tait plus t\u00f4t cette ann\u00e9e, lors de la conf\u00e9rence IRMS). Bien que j\u2019aie \u00e9t\u00e9 initi\u00e9 au concept d\u2019un \u00ab\u00a0accueil \u00e9cossais digne de ce nom\u00a0\u00bb tel qu\u2019il est d\u00e9peint dans le film\u00a0Uncharted<\/strong>\u00a0(A Proper Scottish Welcome | Uncharted 2022<\/a>), Glasgow a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s accueillante, tant au niveau du temps que de ses habitants.<\/p>\n

C\u2019\u00e9tait ma deuxi\u00e8me\u00a0iPRES<\/a><\/strong>. Ma premi\u00e8re \u00e9tant l\u2019iPRES19 \u00e0 Amsterdam. Tout comme la premi\u00e8re, je quitte cette conf\u00e9rence gonfl\u00e9 \u00e0 bloc et me sentant \u00e0 la fois enrichi par les informations partag\u00e9es et les conversations avec tant de professionnels du domaine, et d\u00e9sireux de renouveler mes efforts pour aider \u00e0 fournir de meilleurs outils et solutions \u00e0 la communaut\u00e9 de la conservation num\u00e9rique. Si vous ne connaissez pas l\u2019iPRES<\/a><\/strong>, je vous encourage vraiment \u00e0 jeter un coup d\u2019\u0153il aux t\u00e9moignages qui sont mis \u00e0 la disposition du plus grand nombre de personnes. Mon sentiment sur les tendances et les sujets de cette ann\u00e9e, ceux qui m\u2019ont le plus interpell\u00e9 ou auxquels j\u2019ai adh\u00e9r\u00e9, est le suivant :<\/p>\n

La virtualisation et l\u2019\u00e9mulation font un retour en force avec des projets tels que l\u2019EaaSi de Yale. Un autre exemple pragmatique significatif de l\u2019utilisation de l\u2019\u00e9mulation qui en fait certainement un bon rem\u00e8de est celui pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans un poster par le Centre Canadien d\u2019Architecture qui poss\u00e8de dans ses collections de nombreux fichiers CAO de diff\u00e9rents logiciels qui ne sont plus utilis\u00e9s et qui ne peuvent pas facilement \u00eatre migr\u00e9s vers un format plus r\u00e9cent.<\/p>\n

L\u2019ADN en tant que stockage, si vous m\u2019avez parl\u00e9 de ce sujet vous savez que je suis sceptique, pour faire court je ne suis toujours pas convaincu qu\u2019il soit plus efficace que de ciseler l\u2019information dans le marbre (en termes de co\u00fbt, de taille, de densit\u00e9 de stockage et de pr\u00e9servation de l\u2019information). Mes opinions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 remises en question sur le sujet et je suis devenu plus enclin \u00e0 le consid\u00e9rer comme une solution viable, c\u2019est d\u00e9finitivement un sujet qui restera sur mon radar.<\/p>\n

Pr\u00e9servation des bases de donn\u00e9es et autour du format de fichier SIARD. Certaines des questions li\u00e9es \u00e0 la manipulation de grands ensembles de donn\u00e9es et, pour certains, le manque d\u2019outils appropri\u00e9s pour manipuler et fournir un meilleur acc\u00e8s \u00e0 ces bases de donn\u00e9es sont un probl\u00e8me quotidien. Il y a certainement de la R&D qui pourrait aider \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer ces points sensibles, ce qui correspond bien \u00e0 certains des efforts que nous faisons avec\u00a0Arcsys<\/a><\/strong>, donc j\u2019esp\u00e8re que je serai bient\u00f4t en mesure de d\u00e9montrer certaines des fa\u00e7ons dont nous r\u00e9solvons ces probl\u00e8mes.<\/p>\n

Enfin, et surtout, nous avons eu beaucoup de conversations sur la vid\u00e9o. Avec la pr\u00e9sence de nombreux sp\u00e9cialistes de la communaut\u00e9 audiovisuelle, je ne devrais pas \u00eatre surpris, mais il est clair que la\u00a0digital preservation<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0et l\u2019acc\u00e8s aux vid\u00e9os ont encore beaucoup de choses \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer, non seulement sur le plan technique en termes de compression, de gestion des gros fichiers, de streaming, mais aussi en termes d\u2019exp\u00e9rience utilisateur et d\u2019accessibilit\u00e9, comme la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9tablir un lien avec l\u2019horodatage sp\u00e9cifique d\u2019une vid\u00e9o, de fournir des transcriptions pr\u00e9cises et utilisables, de fournir des sous-titres et diff\u00e9rentes pistes audio de mani\u00e8re transparente. En dehors de ces aspects plut\u00f4t techniques, l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de l\u2019iPRES<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>r\u00e9side dans les personnes et les connexions.<\/p>\n

Le dernier jour de la conf\u00e9rence, nous avons eu l\u2019occasion de visiter certains des sites de\u00a0digital preservation<\/em><\/a><\/strong> dans la r\u00e9gion. C\u2019est aussi un plaisir particulier d\u2019\u00eatre accueilli sur les sites o\u00f9 la magie op\u00e8re. Cette ann\u00e9e, j\u2019ai visit\u00e9 la National Scottish Library, situ\u00e9e dans le Kelvin Hall \u00e0 Glasgow. Cela m\u2019a vraiment fait penser \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre citation de Thal\u00e8s \u00ab\u00a0un esprit sain dans un corps sain\u00a0\u00bb car l\u2019endroit comprend d\u2019abord un gymnase public et quelques terrains de sport jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que l\u2019on soit attir\u00e9 dans un long couloir avec un mur recouvert d\u2019un grand \u00e9cran diffusant certaines vid\u00e9os des collections de la NSL. Il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant de visiter les bureaux et de voir les machines et les personnes qui travaillent \u00e0 la num\u00e9risation et \u00e0 la pr\u00e9servation du contenu audio et vid\u00e9o.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This post is an opinion article by Morg\u00e4n ATTIAS, who provides some feedback and personal experience from recently attending iPRES 22 in Glasgow.<\/em><\/p>

Let me start by saying that I was looking forward to this conference. Digital Preservation is a personal passion of mine, and iPRES is clearly the place to meet some of its best advocates, actors, and researchers. It was going to be my second time in Glasgow (the first time was earlier this year while attending IRMS). While I was introduced to the concept of a \u201cproper Scottish welcome<\/a>\u201d as portrayed in the Uncharted movie, Glasgow has been very welcoming, both in terms of weather and of her people.<\/p>

This was my second iPRES. My first being iPRES19 in Amsterdam. Just like the first one I am leaving this conference boosted and feeling both enriched by the information shared and the conversation with so many professionals in the field, and wanting to renew my efforts in helping to provide better tools and solutions to the digital preservation community. If you don\u2019t know about iPRES I really encourage you to have a look at the proceeding which are made available to the greatest number of people. My feeling this year on the trends and topics, those that challenged me the most or that I connected to, are as follows:<\/p>

Virtualization\/Emulation is making a come back with projects such as Yale\u2019s EaaSi. Another significant pragmatic example for the use of emulation which makes it so certainly a good remedy is that presented in a poster by the Canadian Center for Architecture which has in its collections many CAD files from various software that are no longer in use and may not easily be migrated to newer format.<\/p>

DNA as storage, if you have talked to me about this subject you know I am skeptical, to make it short I am still not convinced that it is more effective than chiseling the information in marble (in terms of cost, size, storage density, and preservation of the information). My views were challenged on the topic and I have become more inclined to see it as a viable solution, this is definitely a topic that will remain on my radar.<\/p>

Database preservation and around the SIARD file format. Some of the issues related to the handling of larger datasets and, for some, the lack of proper tools to manipulate and provide better access to those databases are a daily problem. There are definitely some R&D which could help improve those pain points, which lines well with some of the efforts we are making with Arcsys, so I hope I will soon be able to demonstrate some of the ways we solve those problems.<\/p>

Last but not least, we had a lot of conversations about video. With many specialists in the AV community present I should not be surprised, but clearly the digital preservation and access to videos still have many ways to be improved not only on the technical aspects in terms of compression, handling large files, streaming, but also in user experience and accessibility such as linking to specific timestamp of a video, providing accurate and useable transcripts, providing subtitles and different audio tracks in a seamless fashion. Aside from those rather technical aspects, what iPRES is about is the people and connections.<\/p>

The last day of the conference we are given the opportunity to visit some of the digital preservation sites in the area. That is also a special treat to be welcome on the sites where the magic happens. This year I was there to visit the National Scottish Library located in Kelvin hall in Glasgow. It really made me think of the famous quote from Thales \u201ca sound mind in a sound body\u201d for the place includes a public gym and some sports fields first until you are lured into a long hallway with a wall covered by a large screen broadcasting some of the video from the NSL\u2019s collections. Visiting the offices and seeing the machinery and people at work to digitalize and preserve audio and video content was very interesting.<\/p>

I also got to visit the Riverside Museum (which used to reside in Kelvin hall) but is now hosted in a stunning building by architect Dame Zaha Hadid. The collection was presented to us by one of the curators. I was personally quite impressed by the real locomotives and cars displayed. But since I am particularly interested in the experiences and how to convey those experiences from the past to current and future generation the exhibits that was the most innovative to me was the subway train ride in which you can sit in the train and see passengers from the past, with a clever usage of a screen (and thankfully some subtitle for I would have not been able to understand the accents without them).
