Read the transcript: iDBA-Online video
0:00 [Visual] Animated video with narration and background music. Title: “iDBA-Online from Infotel.”
0:01 Narrator: iDBA-Online from Infotel. Automation is typically a term associated with manufacturing, such as robotic arm automation on an automobile assembly line. According to the 2022 World Robotics Report, more than half a million industrial robots are added to manufacturing floors each year, with more than 3.5 million robotic units in production today.
0:05 [Visual] On screen: “Revolutionizing IT management with automation” over a robotic car assembly line, then “2022 World Robotics Report”, “500,000 industrial robots each year” and “With more than 3.5 million robots in production”.
0:25 Narrator: The global pandemic accelerated the need for more automation in the workplace, as fewer humans were working in offices and on manufacturing shop floors. The paradigm shift to IT automation, or the need to do more with less human intervention, was also elevated. In the mainframe arena, where DBA numbers continue to decline, having a tool to help with IT automation is critical to success.
0:27 [Visual] People work in front of screens. On screen: “Pandemic fueled automation adoption”, “IT automation helps do more with less” and “IT automation is critical to success”.
0:48 Narrator: In the mainframe world, where many large enterprises are borrowing DBAs from other systems and cross-training them to become hybrid or universal DBAs, reducing human intervention to manage Db2 and improve app performance and availability is critical to survival. One solution that mainframe DBAs rely on for Db2 automation is Infotel's iDBA-Online. In one iDBA-Online use case, a customer removed 30% of their legacy utilities that manage workloads while improving application performance.
0:49 [Visual] A bank building (“Acme Global Bank”). On screen: “Borrowing DBAs from other systems”, “Cross-training them to become hybrid or universal DBAs” and “App performance and availability”.
1:11 [Visual] On screen: “A customer success story: removed 30% of legacy utilities while improving application performance” and “CPU consumption reduced by 10%”.
1:19 Narrator: In addition, the customer saw a reduction in CPU consumption of 10%. By consolidating their legacy utilities onto a single iDBA-Online server, the customer reduced the number of jobs across three LPARs from nearly 450 to just 37. iDBA-Online helps the DBA centralize workload management across IBM Db2 environments.
1:26 [Visual] Diagram “iDBA-Online consolidated and reduced workloads dramatically”: across three LPARs (A, B and C), the number of jobs drops from 450 to 37 with a single iDBA server. Then: “Centralize workload management across IBM Db2 environments”.
1:44 Narrator: The product looks across the cost impact of maintenance operations and optimizes these costs by balancing CPU consumption against the maintenance cycles necessary to deliver acceptable service levels. For more information on iDBA-Online, visit insoft-infotel.com.
1:47 [Visual] “Why iDBA-Online? Optimize operating costs”: a scale balances CPU and costs, with the notes “Maintenance cycles consume CPU”, “Maintenance cycles are necessary to maintain performance, CPU consumption, and system integrity” and “iDBA-Online measures the cost and impact of maintenance operations to ensure cost efficiency”. Then: “Service level agreement met!”

DB/IQ Online Product Demo
Take a look at the DB/IQ Eclipse plug-in, giving you a complete overview of your Db2 applications.
Read the transcript: DB/IQ demo
0:00 [Visual] Video with narration and background music. Title: “Infotel, DB/IQ-QA Eclipse Plugin”.
0:00 Narrator: The DB/IQ Quality Assurance Eclipse plug-in from Infotel. In this video, we will introduce the DB/IQ Quality Assurance Eclipse plug-in and demonstrate how to analyze SQL code quality and associated costs with just a few clicks in a browser-based UI. The DB/IQ software suite offers a wide range of solutions to ensure coding standards are maintained for the best possible performance at optimal cost for all Db2 for z/OS applications.
0:20 [Visual] On screen: “DB/IQ software suite”: check any SQL statements; simulate production-like access paths; ensure optimal indexes; assist DBA managing Db2 packages; establish enterprise-wide SQL standards; detect and avoid performance problems early; develop efficient SQL (ISPF and Eclipse-based IDEs).
0:33 Narrator: DB/IQ assists DBAs and systems programmers in checking static and dynamic SQL statements, regardless of origin, emulating production-like access paths, determining optimal indexes, and assisting with the management of Db2 packages. It also establishes enterprise-wide SQL standards for developers, who can leverage DB/IQ to detect and correct performance problems already in the software testing stage and provide efficient SQL. Integrated development environments like Eclipse are commonly used to develop business applications.
1:02 [Visual] On screen: “Eclipse-based IDEs”: Eclipse, IBM Rational Developer for z Systems, IBM Data Studio, Topaz.
1:09 Narrator: Using Infotel's plug-in, developers can now leverage a host of preset rules defined in DB/IQ to check code quality on the host system and submit improved SQL workloads without leaving their development environment. In this web-based workflow, we select the Quality Assurance tab in DB/IQ QA and select the SQL workloads to be analyzed. Next, we'll use the multi-SQL function to point to the SQL source, along with the names of the statements.
1:24 [Visual] Screen recording of the Eclipse workspace. In the project tree, the user selects the file SQLDEMO.txt; a progress window, “Create request files and markers”, appears; the Quality Assurance view then lists the 11 statements found in SQLDEMO.txt.
1:38 Narrator: DB/IQ then analyzes the statements, consuming minimal system resources. The result is fast and displays the quality of the statements with severity codes and a cost factor if the programmer doesn't update the statement in question. The dashboard displays the QA analysis, including sortable columns that show the status, highest severity code, weighting information, and the cost factor if there is no update to the statement.
1:45 [Visual] The table shows the columns Query ID, Status, Modified, Title, Subsystem, Rule set name, Explain mode, Code, Cost factor and Total weight; status and severity icons fill in row by row.
2:04 Narrator: By selecting a QA analysis, we can display the analyzed statement and its corresponding code deficiencies at the bottom. A message panel at the bottom right shows users the rules, to better understand how the code can be improved. As an example, the first severe problem in the message panel shows that the object should not be coded with CREATOR.
2:10 [Visual] Query 1 is selected: its SQL text appears at the bottom left; the message panel at the bottom right lists findings such as “found OBJECT coded with CREATOR.name (SYSIBM)” and “found TS limit was exceeded: NPAGES (limit)”, each with its rule number; a help window explains rule S0202.
2:29 Narrator: The second problem indicates that the tablespace scan limit has been reached. On the next tab, you'll find details on the EXPLAIN information that was executed on the system and see which table's tablespace was scanned. You'll also find relevant information about the indexes that were used in steps 2 and 3 of the access path.
2:33 [Visual] The “Explain plan” tab shows the access path steps, then the index column statistics and the explain plan statistics.
2:51 Narrator: More EXPLAIN information about indexable predicates, objects used, result set, rules, and explain cost and structure can be viewed in the other tabs. Knowing the characteristics of an SQL statement and how to improve it, the user can now modify the statement in view, rerun DB/IQ QA, compare the results, and finally go to the source code, where all the statements have been analyzed and marked. For more information on how to improve your Db2 application code quality, feel free to visit our website at insoft-infotel.com/database-management.
2:56 [Visual] The other tabs are Indexable predicates, Objects, Resultset, Rules, Explain cost and Explain structure. Back on the overview, part of the SQL statement is highlighted.

DB/IQ PackMan Product Video
Discover how DB/IQ PackMan can declutter your Db2 catalog to speed up backups and reorganizations.
Read the transcript: DB/IQ PackMan video
0:00 [Visual] Animated video with narration and background music. Title: “Infotel presents DB/IQ Package Management, a.k.a. PackMan.”
0:05 [Visual] Illustrated developers work on laptops; small blue cubes, standing for load modules, multiply and fill the screen.
0:05 Narrator: The roots of mainframe software development on Db2 date back to the early 1980s. In the Db2 application world, it's not uncommon to have 100 programmers working on a single application, all of them working in series. These developers are constantly writing and testing code, creating executable files called load modules, for applications they are building and others they maintain.
0:28 Narrator: Over the years, in just a single enterprise, it's not uncommon to have tens of thousands of applications populating Db2 catalogs, with hundreds of thousands of load modules. Today, many of these load modules are outdated versions, just taking up space and slowing critical Db2 maintenance operations, such as backups and REORGs. And when slow backups and REORGs spike your rolling four-hour average CPU capacity, your mainframe budget takes the hit.
0:43 [Visual] A “Backup progress” bar barely moves, then the words “Rolling 4-hour average” appear.
0:56 Narrator: With Agile and DevOps now being introduced into mainframe environments, load modules are being created and tested faster than ever before. Infotel's DB/IQ Package Management, or PackMan, helps declutter your Db2 catalog by removing packages that do not match active load modules. The key to maintaining a cleaner Db2 catalog is identifying which modules are needed and removing the ones that aren't.
0:57 [Visual] On screen: “Agile and DevOps”, with three developers at their laptops, then “Infotel's DB/IQ PackMan”.
1:22 Narrator: But with all of the change Db2 has undergone since the 1980s, 24-, then 31-, then 64-bit applications, for example, there could be hundreds of thousands of different modules in a catalog. The magic sauce of this module cleanup is identifying and matching consistency tokens, or CONTOKENs, in the database. But with each module having different ways of storing its CONTOKEN in a package, identifying in-production packages can become an impossibility.
1:27 [Visual] On screen, one after the other: “24-bit”, “31-bit”, “64-bit”; then “Identifying and matching consistency tokens” and “Identifying in-production packages can become an impossibility”.
1:53 [Visual] On screen: “Maintain a cleaner Db2 catalog”, then icons labeled “Analyzes and checks”, “Identifies and removes”, “Takes a snapshot” and “Cross-references for consistency”.
1:53 Narrator: PackMan helps maintain a cleaner Db2 catalog in a multitude of ways. PackMan analyzes and checks all CONTOKENs and the origins of all packages to ensure only the matching ones are pushed into production. It identifies and removes unneeded packages.
2:10 Narrator: PackMan takes a snapshot of all relevant modules, creating the baseline for future checks. It creates cross-references of all packages to ensure load module consistency. PackMan marks inconsistencies and reports on free packages.
2:25 [Visual] On screen: “For more information: blog.infotelcorp.com/resources”, then “For a complimentary trial: go.infotelcorp.com/packman-free-trial”.
2:25 Narrator: Visit blog.infotelcorp.com/resources to learn more about our customer use cases with PackMan for Db2. For a complimentary, fully functional trial of DB/IQ PackMan, please visit go.infotelcorp.com/packman-free-trial.
